I’ve been doing my best to create some kind of routine lately. I’m trying to cook more, exercise consistently, read, write, and show up for work in a way that feels intentional. I know having some structure makes me happier. It helps me feel productive, grounded, and a little less anxious.
The problem is… I am really bad at sticking to one.
I’ve realized that the hardest part isn’t creating a routine — it’s figuring out how to keep it when life happens. A dinner with friends, a spontaneous plan, or even just one day of falling off track somehow turns into me struggling to find my way back.
I think the biggest thing I’m trying to balance right now is having a routine without letting it become a restriction. I don’t want to be the person who never makes plans because it might interfere with my schedule. I want friendships, experiences, and memories. But I also know that when I completely abandon my routine, I don’t feel like myself.
It’s a weird balance: wanting a life full of people and moments, while also needing time alone to take care of myself.
It’s definitely been a challenge. I used to go to the gym before work, and honestly, I think that might be the answer. Do I love the idea of waking up at 5 a.m. to work out? Absolutely not. It sounds terrible. But I also remember how good it felt to start my day with something that was just for me.
A morning workout, listening to my audiobook on the way there, and walking into work feeling like I already did something for myself sounds pretty ideal. Then maybe my afternoons can be for friends, plans, and enjoying life without feeling like I’m sacrificing the things that keep me grounded.
I’m going to try this for the next couple of weeks and see if it makes a difference.
I’m writing this mostly as a way to hold myself accountable to creating a more realistic routine — one that supports my life instead of making me feel trapped by it. I don’t need a perfect schedule; I just need something that helps me feel like the best version of myself while still leaving room for the people and moments that matter.
What’s one part of your routine you can’t live without? I’d love to know what keeps you grounded.
